Shane Beck
If you’ve ever wondered how your internet service just seems to work or had an Eastlink outage resolved before you’ve even had time to panic, you may have Shane Beck to thank. A longtime member of Eastlink’s service and maintenance team in Dartmouth, Shane spends his days keeping the “outside plant” (this is all the physical infrastructure that connects Eastlink’s network to our customers) in top shape—installing, testing, troubleshooting and repairing.
But what really fuels Shane? The thrill of fixing an outage and restoring service to an entire community. “Getting a large group of people back up and working, that’s the most rewarding part,” he says.
Recently, Shane swapped tool belts for the bright lights of Eastlink’s latest commercial. “I’ve been here a long time and never done anything like this,” he admits. “I’d love to do more of it!” Turns out, he’s a natural.
His advice for young tech hopefuls? “This job isn’t for everyone,” he says bluntly. “You are in people’s homes and deal with all kinds of situations… make sure it’s what you want to do. But it’s a great job, I’ve met amazing people.”
When he’s not keeping the network alive, Shane is hanging out with his dog Ninja, making TikToks, hitting the ice for some hockey, or escaping to his camp with friends. Internet hero by day, content creator by night. What can’t this guy do?
